Are You Actually in the Shopify Catalog? The Eligibility Checklist

Are You Actually in the Shopify Catalog? The Eligibility Checklist

Shopify Catalog inclusion has a strange property: it is automatic, it is invisible, and nothing in your admin confirms it happened. Eligible products flow into the index that ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and the Shop app read, with no action needed from you. Ineligible products just quietly do not, and no report tells you which camp you are in.

That makes eligibility the first question of agentic commerce, before ranking, before the buy box, before any of the optimization work. If a product fails the entry requirements, everything downstream is moot. The requirements are documented in Shopify's help center, so here they are as a checklist you can run against your own store in ten minutes.

The store-level checklist

Three things at the store level decide whether anything of yours can be included at all.

  1. You are on the Starter plan or higher. Trials below that line are out.
  2. Your store has no password page. This is the one that bites new and rebranding stores. A password-protected storefront is invisible to the Catalog no matter how good the product data behind it is. If you launched, turned on the password for "just a weekend," and forgot, you removed your whole catalog from AI shopping.
  3. Your account is in good standing. Shopify factors in sales history, fulfillment, chargebacks, and policy compliance. You cannot audit this line item directly, but if the rest of your Shopify life is healthy, it is not the thing blocking you.

The product-level checklist

Eligibility is then decided product by product, which is why stores are often partially included without knowing it. For each product that matters to you, check:

  • It has a title. Trivial, until a CSV import leaves a batch of variants titled by SKU.
  • It has at least one image. Products with zero images are excluded.
  • The price is above zero. Free products are not included, which catches giveaway items, samples, and the "$0 deposit" pattern some stores use.
  • It is published to the Online Store, Hydrogen, or Headless channel and has a reachable product URL. A product that lives only in a draft, or only on a POS channel, is not in the index.
  • It is not Unlisted and not hidden from search engines. Both statuses exclude a product, and both are easy to set once and forget.
  • It is not a B2B-only product, and it does not fall into the sensitive or mature content categories Shopify excludes.

Two patterns cause most real-world failures: bulk imports that miss a field on a subset of products, and visibility settings applied during a sale or cleanup that never got reverted. Neither announces itself.

The channel toggles are a separate layer

Being in the Catalog and being sold through a given AI surface are two different switches, and the second one lives under Sales channels, then Agentic in your admin, active by default for eligible stores.

The channels do not all work the same way. ChatGPT is a referral surface: shoppers find your product in the conversation and complete the purchase on your own checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. Google AI Mode with Gemini and Microsoft Copilot support direct checkout, a Shopify-powered checkout that happens inside the chat itself, and each can be toggled per channel. Gemini has one extra dependency worth knowing: it reads product data through the Google & YouTube sales channel, so that channel needs to be installed with product sync active. The agentic surfaces are also US-centric today, so you need to sell to customers in the United States, and Catalog searches filter by where you ship, so a product that does not ship to the shopper's destination is filtered out of their results regardless of eligibility. Completed store policies and the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms round out the requirements. We compare the channels in more depth in which AI channels to turn on.

The honest caveat, from Shopify itself

Passing every line above does not put your products in AI answers. Shopify's own documentation says it plainly: being included in Shopify Catalog does not guarantee that a product will appear in a specific AI answer, be ranked in a specific position, or be displayed by every channel connected to the Catalog.

Eligibility gets you on the shelf. Whether an assistant reaches for you is decided by the quality of your product data, your price and availability against competing offers, and the assistant's own selection logic, the game we cover in how the Catalog ranks products. Treat this checklist as the entry ticket, not the win.

How to verify you are actually in

Since your admin will not confirm inclusion, verify from the outside, the way an assistant sees you.

Start with our free Catalog Readiness checker: it reads your public storefront and grades the product data the Catalog is built from, in about a minute. Then confirm presence directly: the live rank snapshot inside AgentReady generates up to five buyer-style queries from your own catalog and asks the Global Catalog where you actually surface, free on every plan. If a category search returns your competitors and never you, work through why your products don't show up in AI shopping, and use the absorption check to find products that are stranded outside the index.

Eligibility is the cheapest fix in agentic commerce. Every item on this list is something you can correct this afternoon, and until they are corrected, nothing else you do for AI visibility counts.

See where your store stands

Get found and recommended by AI shopping assistants.

Run the free AI-Readiness Checker to see, in about ten seconds, how ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google read your store today and exactly what is holding it back. Then AgentReady fixes the gaps for you, adding Schema.org structured data, an llms.txt directory, and an ongoing audit. Plans start at $29/mo with a 5-day trial.
